Zechariah

Call to Repentance and the Vision of Horsemen

1
Chapter 1
1 In the eighth month, in year two of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo the prophet, saying. 2 The LORD's wrath against your fathers—wrath. 3 You shall say to them, Thus says the LORD of hosts: Return to me, says the LORD of hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. 4 Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets called out, saying, “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Return, please, from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.” And they did not listen and they did not pay attention to me, declares the LORD. 5 Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6 Only my words and statutes that I commanded my servant the prophets—did they not overtake your fathers? And they returned and said, “Just as the LORD of Hosts planned to do to us according to our ways and according to our deeds, so he has done to us.” 7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Shevat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo the prophet, saying. 8 I saw at night, and behold—a man riding on a red horse, and he was standing among the myrtles that were in the thicket, and behind him were red horses, sorrels, and whites. 9 And I said, "What are these, my lord?" And the angel said to me, "The word in me—I will show you what these are." 10 The man standing between the myrtles answered and said, “These are those whom the LORD sent to walk about on the earth.” 11 And they answered the angel of the LORD, the one standing between the myrtles, and they said, “We have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is sitting and quiet.” 12 The angel of the LORD answered and said, "LORD of Hosts, how long will you not have compassion on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah that you have been angry with these seventy years?" 13 And the LORD answered the angel—the word in me—with good words, comforting words. 14 The angel said to me, “Call out, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: I have been jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with great jealousy.’” 15 And I am very angry with the complacent nations, against which I was a little angry, and they helped for the evil. 16 Therefore this is what the LORD says: I have returned to Jerusalem in mercy; my house will be built in it—oracle of the LORD of Hosts—and a line will be stretched over Jerusalem. 17 He called again, saying, "This is what the LORD of hosts says: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem."
